We designed the following user interface for the app based on the multiple intelligence theory, aiming for bringing the learner a fun and individualised language learning experience

  • Before the learners start the learning, they will need to complete a Multiple Intelligence test first.

  • Based on their choices for each item, the learner's top three intelligences will be presented.

  • Accordingly, different pedagogies and learning activities which are tailored for learners with different types of intelligence will be implemented in their language learning.

  • An algorithm which automatically presents individualised content according to the test results should be created.

  • For learners who have shown music intelligence in the multiple intelligence test, the Melanlody player which combines classical music with English words according to their emotional valence will be used.

  • In the first interface design, an upbeat classical music piece 'Menuet D major' by Mozart was combined with English words with positive meaning such as 'radiant' and 'gleeful'. 

  • In the second interface design, a negative and spooky piece of classical music 'Danse Macabre' was paired with negative emotional words such as 'loathsome' and 'monstrous'.

  • An algorithm which automatically combines emotional words with classical music pieces should be created

When the learner wishes to learn the detailed meaning of a certain word, she/he could press the pause button and click the word. Then the interface on the left would appear on the screen.

 

This function allows the learner to acquire a word through a sample sentence and detailed English explanation. A relevant image will also be presented to facilitate the learning.

After the learner finishes the learning, several multiple choice items will be presented to enable the learner to self-assess their vocabulary knowledge. 

The questions which are answered incorrectly will be recycled to the next round of the quiz.

  • The above user interface shows a game designed for practising the learner's spelling skills. At the game, the Chinese translation of the English words will be given, and the learner will need to type each letter to make sure it's the correct spelling.

  • Different notes are embedded in different letters on the keyboard. When the learners type the correct letters, they will hear a familiar tune. 

  • This game gives the learner the pleasant experience of playing a keyboard, but it could also strengthen the learner's language knowledge.
